Probably a lot older than i have listed it for, either early victorian or regency. With many different woods inlaid into a burr walnut front and wow walnut sides. Very solidly constucted with the original skiver (leather)only slightly scruffy.
Opening to reveal a stationary box under the top and a writing slope under the front. To one side is a brass pin that when removed allows the side drawer to open. The side drawers are often discribed as secret drawers!
On this slope if you lift up the top flap of the writing slope you are presented with a beuatiful satinwood storage space that looks as it would have centurys ago. Then if you reach into the side drawer as if tickling trout you will find a hole above the drawer hidden inside. If you wiggle and curl your finger you will trigger the opener of the secret compartment. There are two cute little secret drawers. When i discovered this the dust and lint that had got in there, and the total newness of the surface indicated that knowledge of this compartment was lost soon after the slope was made.
I must confess it made my day to find it even though there were no guineas or little pouches of diamonds (still one day). This is a big old slope measuring 37 x 36 x 23 cm closed and 37 x 60 x 35 when open and weighing about 5kg. Please look at photos and feel free to ask questions.
And for those new to writing slopes --.... WRITING SLOPES I restore many different types of boxes for the artist /creator.They are all well earnt and are marks of honour! In others i try to make the slopes as close to there original condition as possable. I try to restore all of these slopes to work well for there new owners and to be a companion for them on their journey of creation.
I also try to discribe the slopes personality! Long ago fast travel or communication meant that the horses were well feed or the the wind was in the right direction.
In that time empires spanned the world and people born in places, where far away was the next village, moved to the over side of the planet or toured the massiveness of europe or moved to the city. And most people were stangers in a strange land, both literaly and figerativly. At those times the writing slopes were designed and built by the craftsmen of the time to link you to the world and to home , wherever you found yourself, you could go to your slope prepare your pens, paper and ink and communicate.
For many it was that one constant , that rock to cling to. They were designed for that. See the different crafts and the different purposes and stories they tell. Find one to fit you and give it new purpose.
