Mid 19th Century Writing Slope with Secret Drawers, Inkwells & Key

A good looking quintessentially British mid 19th century writing slope, constructed from solid mahogany with brass reinforced edging and string decoration. Two brass screw topped inkwells, and the original lock and key. Long drawer to the base.

The top has an ornate brass, vacant cartouche, which is replicated with the same shaped escutcheon to the front. The top opens to reveal the writing slope which has been re-lined with a black leather skiver with Grecian key pattern gold tooling. Both writing slope flaps lift up to access storage areas beneath. At the top end, there is a central pen tray with removable pen tilt, compartments either side for nibs, stamps etc.

And the inkwells in each corner. On either side of the box, is a brass carrying handle. The long drawer to the base can be pulled out via the handle on the right, having first removed a brass locking pin, on the right hand side edge.

To access the three secret drawers, you have to pull up the divider between the right inkwell and the adjacent compartment. This will in turn, release a sprung timber section, revealing the drawers.

The base has been given a new green baize lining. Is again in excellent presentable condition with good colour and patination to the mahogany. Measurements: 45.5cm wide, 26.5 cm deep and 18cm high.

C leaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to tim e. O ccasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please dont use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the wax ed surface.
